Final Prototypes

Cold climate high-performance outdoor clothing and technical outerwear has a specific role, which is to keep its user safe and protected in often dangerous and potentially life-threatening conditions. This honours project developed by Abigail Burgess hopes to respond and present new solutions to this market, acknowledging past innovators and research in the textile industry whilst capturing garments in their truest form through a series of garments. Technical apparel has enormous potential to develop in both technology and sustainability, enhancing the experience of athletes, and proposing new solutions that consider the environment. Throughout the design process, five key areas have been identified. These are: Comfort, Protection, Ergonomics, Sustainability & Innovation. Burgess’ collection aims to address one or more of these areas in each garment, ensuring that each piece is suitable for the cold climate it is exposed to. To uphold the sustainability aims of the project, a large amount of fabric from companies has been collected and repurposed to create unique and one-off pieces. In addition to this, reclaimed down and merino off-cuts have been used with zero waste pattern cutting techniques, and technology using renewable energy to propose environmentally conscious solutions to an ever-progressing outerwear market. This project also embraces user testing, basing the final, refined garments off the tested garments to show a more purposeful and function-based interpretation of the product. Talent: Casey Wallace.
